De H. P. Lovecraft

Celephaïs is a short fantasy story penned by H. P. Lovecraft, first published in 1922 in the Rainbow magazine.

The Enigmatic Journey of Kuranes

Kuranes, a solitary man in his forties, resides in the London of his time, leading a life of isolation. He cannot recall his real name, but in his dreams, he is known as Kuranes.

He frequently dreams of a mystical city named Celephaïs, nestled in the valley of Ooth-Nargai by the sea. This city remains unchanged over time, always in the same state, no matter how long it has been since he last visited in his dreams.

Kuranes embarks on dream journeys to this city, but just as he approaches and nears its gates, he awakens, unable to reach it. Celephaïs seems to be a creation of Kuranes’ mind, existing only in his dreams…

This tale is part of Lovecraft’s renowned Dream Cycle, with the city of Celephaïs making appearances in subsequent stories.
