Frankenstein: A Timeless Tale of Science and Consequence
Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, more commonly known simply as Frankenstein, is a novel penned by Mary Shelley and first published in 1818. The story unfolds around Victor Frankenstein, a science enthusiast who delves into experiments with corpses, ultimately succeeding in artificially bringing one to life. This creation, however, escapes and begins to narrate its own experiences of rejection, loneliness, and fear after being granted life.
Beyond its mysterious and dark narrative, this novel is rich with ethical and philosophical reflections on the origins of life, the impact of scientific and technological advancements on human existence, and the repercussions of our actions. Victor’s failure to take responsibility for his creation is emphasized by his refusal to name it, leaving it vulnerable to the challenges of its new and solitary life.
While Frankenstein is clearly inspired by the Gothic novel tradition, many critics argue that it is the first true science fiction novel ever written. When Mary Shelley began writing Frankenstein at the young age of 18, she likely did not anticipate the lasting impact it would have, both at the time and centuries later. Initially conceived as a short story when Lord Byron suggested his friends write ghost stories for entertainment, Shelley’s work stood out, eventually being published in 1818 as a Gothic horror novel.
Interestingly, the novel was initially published anonymously, dedicated to W. Godwin, with a preface by Percy B. Shelley, leading to the initial attribution of authorship to him. However, later studies confirmed that despite Percy’s corrections and annotations, Mary Shelley was indeed the original author.
